SEMA #84 Toyota Tacoma TRD ProRunner Race Concept

SEMA #84 Toyota Tacoma TRD ProRunner Race Concept

Toyota took the desert racing scene by storm with the reveal of the #84 Tacoma Toyota Racing Development ProRunner Race Concept at the 2024 Specialty Equipment Market Association Show. This race-ready truck embodies Toyota’s vision for an off-road powerhouse that highlights the potential of the new Tacoma lineup. Paul Doleshal, Group Manager of Motorsports at Toyota Motor North America, described the concept as a showcase of the Tacoma’s performance, versatility, and adventure-driven spirit. The #84 Tacoma Toyota Racing Development ProRunner Race Concept, he noted, captures the essence of what a purpose-built race truck could become within the Tacoma family, blending high-speed, desert-racing elements inspired by Baja with the rugged two-door XtraCab setup. The unveiling also celebrates Toyota’s new partnership with Legacy Motor Club and legendary race car driver Jimmie Johnson. Johnson, who is best known for his successful National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing career, has deep roots in off-road racing and an early connection to Toyota trucks. Reflecting on the journey, Johnson shared, “I actually took my driver’s test in my uncle’s Toyota pickup. So these trucks and I go way back. This #84 Tacoma Toyota Racing Development ProRunner Race Concept shows off Toyota’s serious off-road capabilities.” The truck is built specifically for the Stock Mid-Size off-road racing class, packed with features drawn from the 2025 Tacoma Toyota Racing Development Pro model. A full suspension overhaul includes FOX Quick Switch 3 Internal Bypass shocks with two-and-a-half-inch aluminum housings, rear remote reservoirs, and front Toyota Racing Development Upper Control Arms. Underneath, heavy-duty skid plating protects critical components like the transmission and transaxle. Inside, a custom roll cage and multipoint race harnesses secure the driver and navigator in IsoDynamic Performance seats, while the aluminum-reinforced bed houses a fuel cell and spare tire. The concept’s color scheme, designed by Kyle Williams, merges classic and contemporary styles, with the exclusive “Mudbath” base color complemented by graphics inspired by Jimmie Johnson and Toyota’s racing heritage, including Ivan “Ironman” Stewart’s iconic Baja stripes. The #84 Tacoma Toyota Racing Development ProRunner Race Concept stands as a thrilling tribute to both Toyota’s and Johnson’s legacies in off-road racing, showing fans what can happen when innovation meets history.
