McLaren 650 Spider Can-Am Live Photos
McLaren Newport Beach has published the first live shots with the limited edition 650S Spider Can-Am.
The Can-Am racing series is going to celebrate its 50th birthday next year and on this occasion McLaren through its MSO division has decided to roll out a special version of the 650S Spider that takes cues from the company’s racing cars of the late 60s. Seen here is the Mars Red version, but customers will also have the possibility of ordering the car with an Onyx Black or a Papaya Spark color and depending on selection, the car comes with a corresponding racing livery.
Aside from the new look, the 650S Spider Can-Am’s hardtop is made from carbon fiber which is a novelty for the model. There’s also a newly developed polished stainless steel exhaust system featuring a quad exit incorporated in a different carbon fiber rear grille and providing a different soundtrack.
The engine compartment hasn’t gone through any revisions, so the open-top supercar has the same 3.8-liter V8 twin turbocharged engine that puts out 650 PS (478 kW) and 678 Nm (500 lb-ft) which will rocket the car to 62 mph (100 km/h) from a standstill in 3 seconds – just like on the coupe – before topping out at 204 mph (329 km/h).
Only 50 cars will ever be made and McLaren’s UK branch is asking £255,850. Those who are not too fond of this special edition should wait for next year when the stronger 675LT Spider will be out.
