Is the New MG S5 EV the Tesla Killer Everyone’s Talking About?
MG is stepping up in a big way with the all-new MG S5 Electric Vehicle, a modern electric sport utility vehicle that blends performance, space, and tech without pushing prices sky-high. Set to hit the United Kingdom market next month and other parts of Europe in the second quarter, this new electric vehicle could be MG’s most complete offering yet.
Underneath the sculpted body lies a performance-focused electric setup. The MG S5 Electric Vehicle is powered by a rear-mounted motor producing up to 170 kilowatts and 350 Newton-meters of torque. That means instant response and satisfying acceleration, especially when combined with rear-wheel drive and an evenly balanced 47 to 53 weight distribution. The SE Long Range version sprints from 0 to 62 miles per hour in just 6.3 seconds, making it a quick and enjoyable daily driver.
Buyers can choose from two battery sizes: a 49 kilowatt-hour battery for the SE Standard Range, or a larger 64 kilowatt-hour battery found in the SE Long Range and Trophy Long Range models. Those seeking maximum driving distance will appreciate the SE Long Range’s 298-mile combined range, while the Trophy Long Range is close behind at 288 miles. Thanks to fast charging, topping up from 10 to 80 percent takes just 24 minutes for the smaller battery and 28 minutes for the larger pack. That means less time waiting and more time driving.
MG has also worked with Continental to create a dedicated braking system designed specifically for electric vehicles. The MG S5 Electric Vehicle uses large brake discs and Continental’s latest braking booster technology, helping the vehicle stop from 62 miles per hour in just 35.5 meters.
Inside, the MG S5 Electric Vehicle offers a premium feel with a modern layout. Passengers up front get 1,026 millimeters of headroom, while rear passengers enjoy 967 millimeters. The boot provides 453 liters of storage space, expanding to 1,441 liters when the rear seats are folded down. There’s even a smart, two-stage boot floor for more flexibility.
The centerpiece of the cabin is a sharp 12.8-inch touchscreen that runs MG’s iSmart system. With it, drivers can pre-condition the cabin, check range and battery status, and even locate the vehicle—all from their smartphone. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are wireless, and apps like YouTube, Spotify, and TikTok come pre-installed.
MG has also included a second 10.25-inch digital driver display, plus real physical buttons for essential controls like climate, audio, and hazard lights. These thoughtful touches help reduce distraction and make the interface intuitive.
Safety is front and center with the MG Pilot system, which includes features like adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, blind spot detection, and active emergency braking. Unique to the MG S5 Electric Vehicle is the Pilot Custom function, which lets drivers tailor the driver assistance settings to their preferences.
On the outside, the styling draws inspiration from the MG Cyberster. It features a bold split front grille, sleek LED daytime running lights with a checkered-flag motif, and silver roof rails that add a sporty edge. Six colors are available, including standout shades like Piccadilly Blue and Dynamic Red.
Starting at £28,495 for the SE Standard Range, £30,995 for the SE Long Range, and £33,495 for the fully loaded Trophy Long Range, MG is delivering great value with its signature 7-year or 80,000-mile warranty.
