2024 BMW 5-Series Revealed

2024 BMW 5-Series Revealed

Embrace the all new 5 Series, known among insiders as “G60.” With options spanning from gasoline and diesel to plug-in hybrid and fully electric powertrains, this luxury vehicle offers a range of choices for a diverse global clientele. However, devotees of the V8-powered model will find their favored M550i temporarily absent.

The car’s exterior exudes familiarity, yet it subtly distinguishes itself from the older design. However, the real transformation is on the inside, where BMW has reimagined its classic dual-screen setup. In collaboration with the i7 M70, the new 5 Series utilizes the updated iDrive 8.5 system. It aspires to provide a more seamless user experience with QuickSelect functionality, eliminating the need for tedious submenu navigation. Despite this technological advancement, the screen dimensions remain consistent with previous models, featuring a 12.3-inch driver’s display and a 14.9-inch touchscreen.

In the United States, the refreshed 5 Series will make its debut with the base model 530i. Under its hood, a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine roars with 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, an incremental upgrade from its predecessor. The power from this four-cylinder unit propels the rear wheels, pushing the 530i to achieve 60 mph in 5.9 seconds. For a little more investment, you can get the 530i xDrive, shaving a tenth of a second off the sprint time.

Subsequent in the lineup is the 540i, exclusively sporting an all-wheel-drive system. A tweaked 3.0-liter, inline-six engine powers this beauty, cranking out 375 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque, a healthy increase from previous stats. A transient boost to 398 pound-feet, courtesy of the integrated mild-hybrid technology, pares down the 0-60 mph time to a mere 4.5 seconds.

For the environmentally conscious, the electric i5 comes in two variants, eDrive40 and M60. The former boasts a single rear-mounted motor that delivers 335 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque (317 with overboost), reaching 60 mph in 5.7 seconds and maxing out at a regulated 120 mph. The M60 version flaunts a dual-motor configuration, pushing out a hearty 590 horsepower and 549 pound-feet of torque (605 with overboost).

The electric M Performance model rockets from zero to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds and doesn’t let up until electronically held at 143 mph. Both zero-emission 5 Series models share a generous 84.3 kWh battery pack. BMW anticipates the rear-wheel-drive version will cover 295 miles on a single charge, while the robust all-wheel-drive model should reach about 256 miles.

In a pioneering move, this eighth-generation 5 Series is the first from BMW to offer an entirely vegan interior. Speaking of the interior, customers can choose to replace the standard slid-and-tilt moonroof with a panoramic one, increasing the viewing area by almost 90% and nearly covering the roof.

The 5 Series is set for its worldwide debut in October. In the United States, the 530i has a starting price of $57,900, followed by the 530i xDrive at $60,200 and the 540i xDrive at $64,900. The i5 eDrive40 and i5 M60 are available from $66,800 and $84,100, respectively, excluding the $995 destination and handling fees. Interestingly, the 540i xDrive will hit the market a bit later due to production beginning only in November. Meanwhile, BMW USA has hinted at the introduction of a plug-in hybrid variant sometime in 2024.

Internationally, BMW’s 2024 5 Series isn’t confined to the previously mentioned models. The lineup extends to include the 520i, 520d, and the 520d xDrive variants right from launch. The following spring, European customers can anticipate the arrival of the 530e and 550e xDrive plug-in hybrids. BMW also has on the drawing board plans for launching a six-cylinder diesel variant in Europe during 2024. Additionally, another i5 equipped with xDrive will join the line, probably nestling itself below the M60 in terms of performance and positioning.

In essence, the new and refined 5 Series exemplifies BMW’s commitment to continuously evolving technology and environmental responsibility, all while upholding the luxury and performance that have become synonymous with the brand. It’s a thrilling time for potential buyers who will be able to customize and choose from a broad and diverse range of options to suit their unique preferences and driving styles. Get ready to be thrilled by the new era of the 5 Series, setting new standards in the automotive luxury sedan market.
