$14 Million Worth Of Ferraris auctioned for lifeboat charity
British businessman Richard Colton proved that once again, “you can’t take it with you when you go.” Colton donated his car collection to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, a volunteer organization in the UK that provides seasonable lifeguard services and on-call rescue boats. The collection was highlighted my two gorgeous and rare Ferraris: a red 1960 250 GT SWB and a silver 1967 275 GTB/4. The pair fetched a combined total of around $14,000,000 at auction, with the GT SWB taking in the lion’s share.
The red 250 sold for £6.6 million or about $10.2 million. The silver 275 was far behind at “only” £1.93 million or $2.89 million. The 250 GT SWB is said to be only one of 10 allotted to the UK, making it an extreme rarity. The 275 GTB/4, while not as rare, is still a fine car. Remember that even Steve McQueen owned one. The irony here is that Colton himself was said to be “nervous of the sea.” Despite that fact he donated his car collection to the organization in the hopes that it would be able to fund the purchase of a new boat named after him and his late wife, Caroline Colton.
