1,287 HP and $87K? Meet the BYD Yangwang U7 Super Sedan

BYD is shaking up the high-end electric vehicle game with the official debut of its Yangwang U7, a luxury sedan that brings nearly 1,300 horsepower to the road for a price that undercuts the competition. Known for affordable electric cars like the $10,000 Seagull, BYD is proving it can play in the ultra-premium segment too—and play hard.

The Yangwang U7 is a true performance beast, powered by four independent electric motors that deliver a combined output of 1,287 horsepower or about 960 kilowatts. It rockets from 0 to 62 miles per hour in just 2.9 seconds. For context, that is supercar speed in a vehicle built to pamper passengers, not just thrill drivers.

It measures 5,265 millimeters in length, 1,998 millimeters in width, and 1,517 millimeters in height—just a bit larger than a Porsche Panamera. The U7 is built on BYD’s DiSus-Z intelligent body control system, which can even stabilize the vehicle during a tire blowout. Advanced safety tech is front and center too, with the company’s “God’s Eye” Level 2 autonomous driving system supported by three LiDARs, five radars, 13 high-definition cameras, and 12 ultrasonic sensors.

The massive 135.5 kilowatt-hour BYD Blade battery delivers up to 720 kilometers of range on the Chinese test cycle. And thanks to 500 kilowatt DC fast charging, you can jump from 30 percent to 80 percent in under 20 minutes.

Inside, it feels like a private jet. The “Star Ring Cockpit” includes a curved 12.8-inch center display, a 23-inch instrument cluster, and 6-inch passenger entertainment screens. The DiLink smart system and DeepSeek artificial intelligence create a fully connected experience.

The best part? BYD shocked the industry by launching it at just 628,000 yuan (about $87,700) for the five-seat model. The four-seat version starts at 708,000 yuan (around $94,300).
