The Most Human-Like Robot Hand Yet: Unitree Dex5 in Action

Unitree Robotics has just revealed something that could change the game for robotic hands—the new Unitree Dex5 dexterous hand. Designed for precision, this robotic hand features 20 degrees of freedom, 16 of which are active and 4 passive. On top of that, it is loaded with 94 sensitive contact points, making it incredibly perceptive and flexible.

Each of the four fingers has 4 degrees of freedom, while the thumb is fully active with 4 of its own. What is even more exciting is that every joint in the Dex5 allows smooth back-drivability. That means the robot can adjust its force naturally during tasks—just like a human hand would.

In recently released demo videos, this high-performance robotic hand easily picked up oranges, played cards, and even solved a Rubik’s Cube. It is seriously impressive. Surprisingly though, Unitree has not yet added the Dex5 to their official website. The only listed product is the Dex3-1, which has just 7 degrees of freedom and 7 moving joints.

The Dex5 shows just how far Unitree Robotics is pushing the limits of robotic manipulation.
