Steve McQueen 1976 Porsche 930 Turbo Sells For $1.95 million
Over this last weekend, someone spent a staggering $1.95 million for this beautiful 1976 Porsche 930 Turbo. That’s a good chunk more than these normally sell for. So why all the extra cash? Well, it once belonged to the legendary actor Steve McQueen who placed an order for what would end up being his last Porsche before he passed away in 1980. This super rare early production 911 Turbo Carrera also known as 930 is powered by a 3.0-liter air-cooled flat-six rated at 234 horsepower and connected to a four-speed manual transmission. For its era, performance was on the top of the food chain, with 0-60 mph coming in an impresses 5.5 seconds.
The color is Slate Gray and was specially ordered by Steve McQueen himself. He also ordered it with a rare sunroof option, positraction, and a beautiful black interior. He later added 8- and 9-inch wide front and rear wheels and tires (one inch wider than stock car) as well as a dashboard switch that disabled the rear lights to help escape detection by the police. After keeping it for a few short years, McQueen sold it back to the dealership he had bought it from. It passed through several happy owners, was restored sometime in 1995, and sold for a low price of $137,500 in auction in 2008. A portion of the massive $1.95 million sale will be donated to The Boys Republic, a non-profit community organization for troubled youngsters, attended by Steve McQueen when he was a teenager.
