Catching a hit and run driver on foot (2)

Dashcam footage captures the brave moment a have-a-go-hero stopped a suspected drunk driver fleeing the scene of a crash with a Porsche by taking the keys from his ignition.

Motorist Michael Scott spotted a collision between a Vauxhall Astra and a Porsche while driving along a road in Birmingham, and noticed the Astra was attempting to drive away from the scene.

He chases the car in his own vehicle, gets out and takes the keys out of the ignition, and the woman driving was later arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

Mr Scott, a professional photographer, caught the whole thing on his dashcam, which shows him speeding in front of the silver car and driving ahead of it to block it from getting away.

As the car tries to pull away a second time, Mr Scott runs after it, and when it stops at a junction, he pulls open the driver’s door and yanks the keys from the ignition.

Michael, who works as a photographer, said: ‘I was driving along when the traffic came to a sudden stop – as we edged closer I noticed there was a Vauxhall Astra estate parked across the road, with front impact damage.

‘I noticed it had hit been in a collision with a Porsche, and I thought ‘that’ll be expensive!’

‘The car started to pull away – I thought the driver was just going to park up out of the way of the traffic.

‘But I was shocked when the Astra driver didn’t stop, and just carried on accelerating up the road.

‘I thought the driver was trying to do a runner, so when the car in front of me moved off I managed to speed up and block the Astra in.

‘I got out and tried to get the keys from the woman’s car, but she drove off around me as she tried to make her escape for a second time.

‘Luckily another car was blocking her path, so I saw my opportunity to stop her getting away by grabbing her keys from the car.

‘I was in a rush so I couldn’t stop, but I gave her keys to the Porsche driver and left – I contacted the police to let them know I had footage of the incident too.’

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: ‘We were called to Hagley Road West at around 2.20pm on Saturday 13 February following a report of a collision involving two cars.

‘An ambulance was called as a precaution, but there is not believed to have been any serious injuries.

‘A 24-year-old Birmingham woman was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and was later bailed pending further inquiries.’
