1990 Mazda Eunos Cosmo Has Three Rotors Two Turbos and for sale
This 1990 Mazda Eunos Cosmo is a recent Japanese import, and is the first we have featured without requisite black paint. Equipped with a twin turbo, three-rotor Wankel engine, these range topping 20B powered examples are scarce even in their home market, and are among our favorite 90s JDM oddities.
Red paint, contrasting gray Auto EXE body kit and gold Mazdaspeed LM wheels make for a more aggressive but still tasteful setup when compared to stock. This seller specializes in triple rotor Cosmos, and though many have been pretty nice, a few have been quite scruffy as well. This one looks to be among the best they’ve brought over thus far.
The interior is just as 90s retro-futuristic as the exterior, and though leather is said to be showing its age with cracks, overall things look pretty good. Many of these cars were equipped with a complex and very early TV/navigation/touch screen interface, and though it’s not clear if this example was thus equipped, it now features an aftermarket head unit and retracting screen. The steering wheel appears to be at full upward/inward position, likely as part of an automatic ignition-off egress mode.
We remember reading somewhere that these averaged about 10 MPG freeway on the official Japanese testing cycle. The world’s first volume-produced twin turbo engine, the 20B-REW was only ever offered in the fourth generation Cosmo, and then only as a flagship range topper. Many have been pulled for hot rod RX-7 and RX-8 builds, and they continue to disappear at an alarming rate. The seller says this one pulls strong and sounds amazing through a quiet set of Auto EXE stainless exhaust headers. A K&N conical air filter has been added as well, but the motor is otherwise stock, the seller adding that it produces no smoke and doesn’t consume excessive amounts of oil.
Though never offered with anything but an electronically controlled 4-speed automatic, we’d love to pick one up and swap in a three pedal setup. If the seller continues importing at this rate, there should be one for all 50 states in no time.
